The New Manager
The problem is the same in all fields, engineering, construction and scientific laboratories. Just like an athlete who was an all-star players are not necessarily qualified to be big in sports coaching. Some people stumble transition into management positions while the other is a natural leader and adjust well to the new role. Others take the time and costs of their organization far more in their errors than the cost of training them in leadership, social intelligence and emotional awareness. High staff turnover and poor production of red flags that indicate a manager does not make the transition.
Managers and leaders in these positions is usually personal struggle. They feel the pressure and can be overwhelmed by it. It only makes the problem worse because they try harder, do more of what caused the problem in the first place. A manager may appear aggressive or controlling when they are in reality fearful or insecure. They may appear self-confident one minute and the next defensive. They may appear sensitive and attentive to the board when they intimidate subordinates.
The Larger Challenge
Once they are in a position of authority to the manager or leader, to learn about these issues, has, in many cases, already done significant damage to the organization. Enough firing manager is not always an easy answer.
